Kurt Bassuener is co-founder and Senior Associate of the Democratization Policy Council, under whose support he has published numerous policy briefs, papers, and studies. He has worked on Balkan policy since 1997. His most recent report, “Pushing on an Open Door: Foreign Authoritarian Influence in the Western Balkans,” a NED Working Paper, was published in May 2019. He is currently a Fulbright scholar and PhD candidate at the University of St. Andrews. His dissertation, to be defended in the autumn of 2019, explains the functional dynamics of post-war power-sharing in Bosnia and Macedonia – particularly how oligarchic politics are entrenched by such arrangements and resistant to evolutionary change.
